Common Room

The brainchild of the ever expanding Prive Group-who already helms popular night clubs Prive, the wildly successful Levels in Lan Kwai Fang, as well as Chocolate and Japanese dining haven Masu. Now they’re adding another drinks/bar/gastropub to their already very impressive resume. Common Room has been getting a ton of buzz recently.

There’s nothing ‘Common about this Room… 😉 once you go in, it’s hard not to want to go back. They’re known for their drinks. With the top cocktail mixologists serving guests the perfect beverage. It’s a classic, sleek, swank and sophisticated gastrobar and (wait for it) eatery hidden behind one of the main streets in LKF. The decor is simple, luxurious and comfortable. Encased in a chic 4,000 square feet area… Common Room’ refers to a place where friends can gather and unwind with good drinks, good food, and good company and this place does exactly that.

It’s very different during late nights on weekends. I’ve went once later in the evening (and it was packed with people enjoying themselves, great music, grabbing drinks among friends!! Twas a fun night ;)) and then on a weekday evening (where it’s much more chilled, relaxed and laid back- great for talking and dining on their international tapas menu.)

BTW: I have been LOVING this sunny albeit hot weather 😀 Lets begin, I present you…COMMON ROOM.

Shhhh…There’s a secret menu sure to impress any person. I had the Liski’s Mule Fresh Ginger, Muddled Strawberries, Homemade Ginger Beer, Ginger Vodka. And, now I know why they’re known for their drinks. Excellently blended with fresh sharp hints of ginger.…fresh, strong, and tasty! I want to go back. NOW.

Lets get to the important stuff, Food. The  world-inspired tapas menu features French, Italian, Indian, and other regions cuisines and is separated into 4 sub categories- Earth, Sea, Land, and Heaven. We tried a little bit of everything…. 😉 ALSO: ORDER the SWEET POTATO FRIES w/ homemade chipotle and buttermilk aioli. The other night, I went again for late night eats and the table next to us were kind enough to give us some fries!! <3 And, boy…did I enjoy it. Will definitely be back for those babies! Perfectly hot and sweet on the inside, while maintaining a fried crisp outer layer. Loved it.

Land dish: Chicken Liver & Foie Gras Pate– Seasoned w/ Peppercorn & Brandy on Homemade Crostini…OK…Lets just say….my favorite of the night. OMG. I’m salivating thinking about this dish. I can’t even describe my love for this. The slight sweetness of the thin brandy and peppercorn jelly coating and the fullness and savoury-ness of the foie gras…it’s really the perfect combination. And, last but not least…atop a crisp, crunchy thin piece of crostini!

Land dish: Wagyu Foie Gras Burgers, Carmalized Onions, Arugula, & Balsamic Vinegar. So I have a thing with mini sliders….like my 22 Ships (post)…it’s this obsession. I briefly divulge my love for mini foie gras burgers. And, I’ve yet to find a place I liked quite as much as 22 Ships until…today. The mini buttered sesame buns sandwich the juicy, BIG, meaty pork patty with a very generous, succulent portion of foie gras in it. The tangy balsamic vinegar is the perfect amount of sharpness and sauce and cuts into the strong foie gras taste perfectly. Good job, Chef. Really liked these babies!!! <3

Sea dish: Scallop Ceviche, Marinated w/ Lime Green Chili, Cilantro, Onions & Vinegar, this was a large chunk of fresh scallop atop a crisp taco circle shell infused with bursts of lime and sauce! It was pretty good, just not my favorite of the night! Burger & Pate had already stolen my heart. Also, if you want to try something from the ‘Sea’ section. I hear the tandoori octopus is a real winner though…must try that next time!

Earth dish: Classic Mac + Cheese, Buffalo Mozzarella, Gruyere, Parmesan, Gouda cheese topped w/ bread crumbs….these mini mac and cheese were the perfect bite sized portion. Perfect for those cheese lovers…plus, it was slightly crunchy and crisp, but perfectly gooey, tart-y and creamy cheesy-ness (is that even a word?) on the inside!

Land dish: Slow Braised Pork Belly, w/ Homemade Apple Maple Sauce. The pork belly subtly melts in your mouth, while having a thin crisp crunchy skin on top. It’s very simple, meaty and hearty with a slight glaze of apple sauce!

How fitting the desserts were found in the Heaven section! Boy, was it a REAL winner. I ordered the Homemade Sorbet, Lime & Raspberry...accompanied with a mini peanut butter, yuzu, jelly that was sooooooo good. It bursts in your mouth- full of flavour, yuzu juice and just simply refreshing. And, I haven’t even gotten to the lime sorbet- which was refreshingly delicious as well, with bits of shredded lime pieces inside!! YUMMY finish. Nice, light and fresh.

I’m not done yet. Thanks to the awesome cocktail mixologists at Common Room….we were well stocked all night! The bartenders were pleasant, friendly, and so warm! Not to mention, very skilled in what they do…Creating delectable, delicious, and dangerous cocktails! (Excuse me…I can’t remember the exact name for everything, we had sips…of everything… ;)) Thanks P and the rest of the guys!!! 😀

Young & Beautiful, what a cute name! Vodka, Fresh Mango & Lemon Juice w/ Ginger Root & Homemade Vanilla syrup. I’m a fan of ginger…and I love that they incorporate that ingredient in their drinks! Bonus… 100% freshly squeezed juice!! 🙂

One is a Saketini; Sake, apple liqueur, fresh lemon juice, horseradish and ginger root w/ homemade green apple syrup…which I really liked! Again, pleasant use of ginger root 🙂 Oh, one thing… this drink may be discontinued, but don’t be alarmed…it’s being replaced by the Hokkaido, an equally if not better tasting version 🙂

To sum it up.. I’m a fan. I highly recommend this place for drinks. I love the relaxed, comfortable and cozy atmosphere…weekdays (chill drinks before heading home), weeknights (pre-drinks before heading to Prive or Levels). 🙂 Food wise: (Mon-Fri) Lunch is 11:30AM to 2:30PM, Dinner is (Mon-Sat)6PM to 10:30PM.

Like I said, there’s nothing “common” about this room. Go before it gets even more crowded!! Once they hold their grand opening… I’m sure this place will be more than packed every single night!! 😀 Go. Go. GO!
